Oh, a neat film, and a good addition to your horror movie have-seens. The beginning was unexpected (and a little brutal), the mood was right, and the woodsy atmosphere was excellent. The beginning gave all the exposition needed for the story without dragging it out, as so many horror movies do. There were no jaw-dropping performances in this, and the horror was a little slow to come on, and, in my mind, pretty stupid for much of the film. They spent too much time in the woods, focusing on bad dreams and weird occurrences: the real meat of the horror came at the settlement, and I wish they’d focused more on that and spent more time killing off the characters there. The monster was good, and super creepy. And I liked the blending of monster movie and cultish horror. I feel this film would have really excelled if they focused more on the monster being a monster, less on it being a nightmare-inducing god. All in all, a solid horror movie, but one that I won’t watch again or feel I need to show others.
