I like James Wan and some of his work. I think the Saw movies were a little execrable - I get it, that the first one was interesting and new-ish and torturesome. But wow could I have not cared less about the next 30 of them. Insidious wasn’t great, but it was interesting. The use of color and light and soundtrack in his movies are excellent. He has a penchant for taking things too far, but has a good eye eerie setups and dark rooms. The Conjuring follows a haunted family and their dealings with the famous demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren. It’s a very scary movie, and is well worth the watch. The fucking clapping game, I mean, come on. That was just unfair. But then the demon jumps off the wardrobe and we all laugh. Just like when the demon sharpened its nails on the grindstone in Insidious. He just can’t help himself. Excellent film, though, with excellent acting (Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor - awesome!) and enough scary moments to really make it worth watching. Total recommendation.
