This was kind of a cool movie, but was also a little annoying. It comes and goes in waves. The “documentary” part of it was not poorly done, but really unnecessary. I’d go so far as to say the first 25 minutes of the movie almost made me turn if off and move on. I wanted this movie to embrace it’s found footage-ness, and stop analyzing it with the goofy actors and townspeople and stuff. The found footage pieces were so interesting and spooky! I mean, I get it. They wanted to try something new, they didn’t want to just make another found footage movie. BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE! Every time my heart started racing and I felt spooked, they’d start doing that narration thing and it really distracted me from the spookiness of the movie. Basically, some young folks are setting up a hell house in an abandoned hotel and some of the props start moving on their own. Very Five Nights at Freddy’s, and I hated it. I feel like my heart couldn’t handle it! Ugh, I wanted them to stop it with the documentary nonsense. It was really distracting. In the end though, they knew their movie, they know the limitations of their budget, and they knew how to make a scary movie using a limited budget as the backdrop. Total recommend.
