So I like M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. Sue me. His movies have a cheesiness to them. They have twists that are easy to figure out and are often annoying because of that. But there are SO. MANY. BAD. HORROR. MOVIES. His films are big budget, beautiful, the dialogue is excellent, they have great atmosphere’s and scores, and they’re pretty much all about Philly - I kind of have to love them. This one excels in all the usual ways, and falls flat in all the usual ways. It’s a fairytale, it’s a moral story, it’s a whodunnit. Best of all about this movie, it really scratches at the immense Catholic guilt and fear I was raised with; that whole religion is one big bummer, and I’m amazed that I still can’t shake it from my bones. Recommended watch.

P.S. I watched this on Netflix, and afterwards, they recommended I watch a Ricky Gervais movie. The devil IS real.
