This movie is really all about atmosphere. It’s shot in Pripyat, the town closest to the Chernobyl disaster, where the reactor employees lived. The setting is sad and spooky and destroyed, and the movie is almost worth watching just to immerse yourself in this devastating landscape. The movie relies heavily on the atmosphere and a few jump scares, fueled by poor acting, stupid dialogue, and grossly insensitive monsters. I could have done without the last 15 minutes of the movie, there are an amazing amount of other ways it could have ended that would have been scary in the way they’d like without being SO ludicrous. It feels as though by the end they were like, Fuck it, we’re already in so deep, let’s take it somewhere more ridiculous! Worth a watch, albeit trite and insensitive to the actual suffering that greatly took place there.
